Our Solar System, To Scale

Happy Summer Solstice! Today we experience the “longest day” of the year. For people in the northern hemisphere, because the northern axis is tilted toward the sun, it gives us the longest day of the year (while it’s the opposite in the southern hemisphere.)

Passive solar building leverages the predictable “movement” of the sun by orienting a building (typically on an east-west axis) and using materials (southern-facing windows, thermal mass, overhangs) in a way that allows the building to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The video gives some perspective about our place in the solar system.
